Beanies is a great story for opening conversations about physical difference and explaining the basics of alopecia to children.

Matthew is a regular kid whose family calls him Foo. He loves his dog, Rizzo, video games, and doing all the things a first grader loves. What he doesn’t love is that his hair is falling out. He doesn’t know any kids who are bald or even kind of bald. Then, he finds out that he has alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair to fall out. Before Matthew found beanies and ballcaps, sometimes kids stared and said mean things. Will others ever be able to understand that different isn’t bad—that different is just different?

Beanies, Ballcaps, and Being Bald is based on the true story of current third grader Matthew Shelby and his real-life first grade teacher Tracy Peterson.

PRAISE for BEANIES

“A wonderful example of the power of friendship and how practicing empathy is an imperative skill for children to develop.” —Betsy Abbott, LCSW, Lower School Counselor

“I recommend this book to parents with children living with Alopecia, especially boys. A homerun! BRAVO.” — Jeff Woytovich, Founder, President, & CEO, Children’s Alopecia Project

“Growing up with alopecia, I got the wrong message from society. Beanies shares the right one. It’s not about hiding baldness to blend in or making a statement to stand out. It’s walking that important line of acceptance and sharing who you are.” — Sarah-Catherine Gutierrez, mother living with alopecia and author of But First, Save 10: The One Simple Money Move That Will Change Your Life
